Straightforward answers to the questions transit agency evaluators, IT teams, and procurement officers ask most frequently about EVCare™.

About EVCare™

What it is and how it works.

What is EVCare™?

EVCare™ is an AI-powered battery health intelligence platform for electric vehicle fleets. It connects to your existing telematics infrastructure and continuously monitors 47 electrochemical parameters per vehicle — producing real-time health scores, maintenance prescriptions, lifecycle forecasts, and fleet fitness rankings. Think of it as a virtual battery engineer watching every bus in your fleet, 24 hours a day.

Is EVCare™ a hardware product or a software product?

Software only. EVCare™ connects to your existing telematics platform (Geotab, Samsara, Zonar, and others) and reads BMS data through standard API connections. There is no new hardware to install, no sensors to fit, and no operational disruption during deployment. Most agencies receive FitStar™ scores within 72 hours of data onboarding.

Which vehicle types does EVCare™ support?

EVCare™ is purpose-built for Battery Electric Buses (BEB) and supports Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). It is OEM-agnostic and currently validated on New Flyer, Gillig, Proterra, BYD, and Lion Electric platforms.

Implementation

Getting started and going live.

How long does deployment take?

For a typical agency with existing telematics infrastructure, EVCare™ is operational within 2–3 weeks. Week 1 covers integration configuration and data mapping. Week 2 covers validation and baseline FitStar™ score generation. Week 3 covers team onboarding and dashboard training. No hardware installation, no service disruption.

Do we need to replace our telematics platform?

No. EVCare™ is designed to layer on top of your existing telematics investment. It reads data from Geotab, Samsara, Zonar, Verizon Connect, and other major platforms via API. Your telematics handles GPS and logistics. EVCare™ handles battery health intelligence.

How does data sovereignty work for US agencies using a Canadian company?

Volterra offers data residency options for US-based agencies. Fleet operational data can be stored and processed on US-based cloud infrastructure. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256). Contact us to discuss your agency’s specific requirements.

Procurement & Pricing

Procurement, pricing, and process.

What does EVCare™ cost?

EVCare™ is priced per bus, per year. The pilot tier starts at $1,200/bus/year (minimum 10 vehicles). Standard deployment is $2,400/bus/year for 25+ vehicles. Enterprise pricing for 100+ vehicle fleets starts at $3,600/bus/year. All tiers include full platform access, telematics integration, and onboarding. See the pricing page for full tier details.

Is the pilot program free?

No — the pilot is a paid program at $1,200/bus/year. This is intentional. A paid engagement creates mutual commitment. The pilot fee is credited against the first year of a Standard or Enterprise contract if the agency proceeds to full deployment.

Can we use cooperative purchasing or government procurement frameworks?

Yes. Volterra can accommodate cooperative purchasing arrangements and government procurement frameworks commonly used by US and Canadian transit agencies. Contact us to discuss the appropriate procurement vehicle for your agency.

What happens if the pilot doesn’t deliver the projected results?

The pilot outcomes report documents actual results against projected benchmarks. Our commercial model depends on delivering measurable value. If we cannot identify and correct performance shortfalls during the pilot, we will work with the agency to identify a fair resolution.
