Volterra Technologies CEO Ian McAvoy has been confirmed as a speaker at Electric Fleets USA 2026, taking place in Los Angeles, California this September. The conference is one of North America’s leading forums for transit agency operators, fleet managers, and technology providers navigating the shift to zero-emission vehicle fleets.

The Session

Ian McAvoy will present on battery health intelligence as a missing layer in the transit electrification stack — making the case that fleet operators have invested heavily in hardware but remain underserved when it comes to understanding what is actually happening inside those batteries at the electrochemical level.

Volterra Technologies is in advanced pilot discussions with a major North American transit agency toward deploying EVCare™ across its Battery Electric Bus fleet — which would mark Volterra’s first commercial deployment with a US transit agency.

The Challenge

As the agency’s BEB fleet scaled, the limitations of general-purpose telematics became operationally significant. Battery health was assessed reactively — issues were discovered after a bus failed or a range shortfall disrupted service — rather than predicted in advance.

The Planned Deployment

• Weeks 1–2: Integration configuration, data mapping, baseline FitStar™ scores live across the full fleet
• Weeks 3–8: FleetAccess RX™ and AMS™ dashboards live; first maintenance prescriptions generated
• Weeks 9–13: Outcomes validated; LPM™ lifecycle forecasts reviewed; ROI model finalised

Volterra Technologies has been awarded funding from NRC IRAP (National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program), Canada’s premier innovation funding program for SMEs. The grant supports accelerated development of EVCare™ and validates Volterra’s position at the intersection of applied electrochemical research and commercial fleet management technology.

How the Funding Will Be Used

• FitStar™ v5.0 refinement: Expanding the electrochemical parameter set and improving five-domain scoring model accuracy
• CareStar™ multi-OEM validation: Validating models across additional mixed-OEM BEB platforms
• IP formalisation: Advancing formal patent applications within Volterra’s comprehensive provisional patent portfolio

Research Partnership with BCIT

Alongside the IRAP grant, Volterra maintains an applied research partnership with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), providing access to battery testing infrastructure and enabling collaborative validation of EVCare™’s electrochemical models against controlled laboratory data.
